Homebuyers to act on EPC info
10/03/2008
A new survey has revealed that almost a third of homebuyers intend to act on the information contained in their energy performance certificates (EPCs).
The EPC comes as part of the controversial Home information pack (Hip) and the news will come as a boost for the government.
There has been much opposition to the introduction of Hips but many within the industry have welcomed the latest findings.
It means that homebuyers are taking notice of the packs and particularly EPCs, which are designed to highlight problems with energy efficiency.
Dave Timms, green home campaigner for Friends of the Earth, said that homeowners need incentives to carry out energy saving home improvements.
"This survey shows that EPCs can play a powerful role in encouraging homeowners to improve the energy efficiency of their property," he commented.
"If they act on this information they will save money on energy bills and cut their carbon emissions. However there is a big difference between knowing what you can do and actually doing it.
"The government must introduce a range of tax breaks to make people more willing to act on this information," continued Mr Timms.
Hips became a mandatory part of the home-selling process for all properties in England and Wales in December 2007.
